The Ministry of Missions is organized into three committee areas: Local Missions operates the Family-to-Family Ministry, which provides direct support —more than $136,000 in 2005—to Alexandria’s needy through individual referrals from city social service agencies. It also supports programs in Alexandria, Fairfax County and Washington, DC, in four general areas: children and youth, homelessness and housing, poverty and hunger, and health care, among other activities. For instance, through Sponsor-a-Family’s 2005 “Holiday Sharing,” the church aided 26 families, three foster children and four teens, and one disabled senior. During Advent 2005, the local Alternative Giving Fair during Advent raised more than $10,000 for local, national and global mission groups.
National and Global Missions is centered on four global partnerships in Haiti, Mexico, Kenya, and Pakistan focusing on areas where we can work with partners to share our resources to meet needs in health, housing, and children. For instance, in 2005 Reynosa, Mexico, work with mission partner, Ministerio de Fe, encompassed a significant effort in that country and here at home. In addition to direct financial support, 28 Meeting House members traveled to Mexico to build a concrete block house for a needy Mexican family, while a local church member handmade a quilt for the family, Bible school children took up a collection for the Reynosa children, four Mexican students were given scholarships, and schoolbags were prepared for the students by Meeting House youth. Other international mission efforts are similarly comprehensive.
The NG committee also coordinates Meeting House financial support for mission activities of the national Presbyterian Church, PC(USA), including basic mission support and support to programs in Kenya, Pakistan, Palestine, Belarus, and Peru.
Larger Church tracks social justice issues facing Christians and recommends congregational actions. It serves as a link to the National Capital Presbytery and the national decision-making body of the Presbyterian Church (USA), the General Assembly.
