The Environmental Stewardship and Advocacy Group (ESAG) focuses on helping members of the Meeting House congregation live as faithful stewards of God’s creation, both in the decisions we make about how to conduct our individual lives and our life together as a church. We are also called to advocate for the protection and restoration of the earth through laws and policies implemented by our local, state and federal governments. To accomplish these goals, ESAG sponsored an Adult Education course on the environment in the spring of 2008 which ended with participants creating their own environmental pledge cards indicating specific actions they were going to take become better environmental stewards.
The Meeting House joined the Greater Washington Interfaith Power and Light (GWIPL) organization in 2008. GWIPL is a non-profit initiative that helps congregations, religious institutions and others in the Washington, D.C. area work for a more just, sustainable and healthier creation by reducing the threat of global warming. GWIPL has conducted an energy audit of the Meeting House facilities and will issue a written report detailing how we can reduce carbon emissions through the lower energy consumption. The report will be shared with the congregation. ESAG also hosted one of the GWIPL-sponsored Virginia Wise Energy Tour, an informational event about the need to improve Virginia’s energy policy to ensure the health and well-being of all Virginia residents. ESAG is also responsible for the Meeting House’s recycling program.
ESAG meets bimonthly and welcomes new members to the Green Team. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Larry Williams at (703) 683-2417. The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it; for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers. Psalm 24 1-2
