The Committee administers four activities relating to
scholarship.The first, using funds
provided through the operating budget of the Church, supports theological
education and training for individuals related to OPMH.
Over the past ten years, OPMH has had at least one
seminarian as a recipient of these funds each year.
The second requires monitoring the Sengel Scholar programs
established with Yale Divinity School and Union Theological Seminary, in
support of post-graduate studies for individuals from Third World
countries.Since the program’s
inception in 1984, there have been over 30 awards to Sengel Scholars in the two
seminaries from every corner of the globe. Some have visited OPMH and participated in worship or adult education.
The third activity involves scholarship grants, using
earnings from Garrett-Claxton Funds, to members of the Meeting House’s
“extended family” for educational purposes. The majority of the awards have gone to needy undergraduate, graduate,
or continuing education students for books, tuition, and other related
expenses.
The Edna Banes Fellowships Program is a new program
initiated in 2004.In honor of the
ministry of former pastor, Edna Banes, and based on restricted funds donated in
her name, the committee invites proposals from individuals seeking
"seed" funding for innovative mission and service, research, or
educational ventures.The Fellowships
are designed to encourage “life-changing activities” that permit new and
imaginative ways to develop personally and to enhance the spiritual life of the
Meeting House community.
OPMH members can learn more about these activities by
contacting the pastors or Scholarship Committee members: Mary Hill, Frances
Killpatrick, or James S. Roberts
