...you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in." Isaiah 58:12
The Social Justice Committee is a new component of the Mission Ministry. Complementing the National/Global and Local Mission committees, it will promote and coordinate social justice education and advocacy within the Meeting House. Currently, Social Justice serves as a home base to the Environmental Stewardship Advocacy Group, a new group formed to establish a strong and active focus on environmental stewardship at the Meeting House. In addition, the committee is providing support while the Meeting House explores partnership with the new Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) affiliate in Northern Virginia, Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement (V.O.I.C.E.).
Social Justice program objectives are to:
· monitor the following websites for news about social justice issues:
Presbyterian Church USA
National Capital Presbytery
Presbyterian Church USA, Washington Office
Covenant Network
· advise the congregation of priorities and opportunities to join with other Presbyterians in social justice actions whenever the PCUSA or the Presbytery identifies a social justice priority through its resolutions and programs;
· support the Environmental Stewardship Advocacy Group and Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement (V.O.I.C.E. ) as needed;
· keep the congregation informed about all social justice efforts at the Meeting House with regular updates to the website, newsletter articles, and classes for Adults and youth;
· identify a large group of Meeting House members who want to be kept informed and will mobilize for social justice actions when called.
