Meeting House Worshipers: Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

 

This Sunday:

Worship Services (10:00 am and 6:30 pm): The summer schedule of a single morning worship service has begun. The 10:00 am morning worship services will continue through August 31. On Sundays in June and July, there will also be a more contemporary service at 6:30 pm in the evening, held in Heritage Hall. Casual dress is encouraged for these evening services.

Christian Education: Classes do not meet over the summer. Classes and Bridges to Worship will resume on September 7.

 

Inquirer’s Class: A 2-week class offered for all who would like to learn more about the Meeting House, or who have recently joined the church, will be held on June 1 and June 8 from 8:30 – 9:40 am in Fellowship Hall. The class will include an introduction to Presbyterian beliefs, as well as an overview of the mission and ministry of the Meeting House. Child care is available.

 

Prospective Confirmand Meeting: This is an informational meeting for the parents of next year’s confirmands on Sunday, June 8, at 5:00 pm in Flounder House 1b. Next year Confirmation will be open to youth in grades eight and nine.

Opportunities to Give or Serve:

 

Come and Learn More About Mission in Pakistan and Forman Christian College! OPMH is hosting an informal gathering on Sunday, June 8, in Heritage Hall, following the 6:30pm worship service. Joining us will be Beenish Khokhar, a student at Forman Christian College in Lahore, Pakistan and Marianne Vermeer, a PCUSA missionary who's just returned from serving for three years at Forman. OPMH has supported mission in Pakistan and this is a chance to learn more about the work there and why it is important. It's a chance to ask questions, see some pictures, understand the importance of Christian educational institutions both historically and in the current environment in Pakistan. Please join us!

 

Relief for Myanmar and China: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance will be responding to the crisis in Myanmar in cooperation with Church World Service and Action by Churches Together. Flower Dedications/Memorials - Kerri Stevens, the point of contact for OPMH’s flower dedications, is seeking contributors for the next three months (June – Aug). Dedications are needed for Sun., June 8 onward. Donation cost is $65. Docent Program: If you're interested in the history of OPMH, with ushering at special times and programs (Christmas Candlelight tours, concerts with a cause, etc.) and transporting us back to the 18th century, please join us as a docent. We hope to expand the program and thus our availability to the church. It takes about 15-20 monutes once a month yet is vital to the Meeting House being a good steward.

 

Upcoming Events / Church News:

 

Battle of the Choirs Benefit Concert: six to eight area choirs and praise bands from the Metro-Washington area will be competing in the Battle of the Choirs Benefit Concert, Heal Haiti's Hunger, an afternoon fellowship event to benefit Community Coalition for Haiti's effort to curb the current food crisis in Haiti. CCH is a Christian organization founded in 1999 by members of several area churches and Inova Health System for the purpose of sharing Christ's love in Haiti. OPMH is a supporting congregation. Heal Haiti's Hunger, Battle of the Choirs, will be held at the Community Church in Ashburn, Virginia, from 2-5 pm. For tickets: 703-880-4160 or online www.cchaiti.org.

 

Youth: OPMH Youth will be going to Presbytery Youth Band Night at Bush Hill Presbyterian Church in Alexandria this Sunday, June 1 from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. The John Lloyd Band from North Carolina will be headlining with other local bands performing as well. We will meet in the OPMH parking lot at 4:45 pm. Parents can pick youth up at Bush Hill Presbyterian church anytime that is convenient for your family. Please bring an offering to support the National Capital Presbytery Youth Scholarship Fund.

 

New York, New York! Get on board early by signing up and pre-paying for a Yuletide day trip to New York City! The December 10, 2008 excursion is sponsored by the SPIRIT group and is open to all of our church members who would like to participate in the fellowship. We will travel by commercial bus leaving the OPMH parking lot around 6:00 am. The bus will transport the group door to door, for all stops during the entire trip. The main feature of the trip is the Radio City Music Hall Show, featuring the Rockettes, and then a back stage tour. The sign up and pre-pay deadline is June 2. The charge for the trip will be $145 per person (excluding meals).

First Sundays with the Stephen Ministers: Stephen Ministers host an informal time of fellowship on the first Sunday of each month for those who are experiencing a difficult or challenging time and would welcome a willing listener. We meet in the Elliot House parlor following the 11:00 am service. 20s30s –This group is open to all in their 20s and 30s (married, single, members, visitors, friends). Meet for brunch, this Sunday, following the 10:00 am service.
