Sermon        Resident Aliens — Dr. Laha

 

A Congregational Meeting will be held immediately following 11:00 worship service, for the purpose of electing elders, deacons, and trustee for the Class of 2011.

 

For Children and Youth:  Classes meet for all ages.  Children in grades 1-5 will begin a new series of workshops today learning about our worship service. Members of the Senior High Sunday School class will be leading workshops. Please check the directory board for grade and workshop assignments.

      Bible Study: Parables, Westminster Hall. This course runs through May 11. Come join us for an in-depth study of parables in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, using the study book “Parables: Stories for Life in God’s World” in the Kerygma Program series. Books are $16. Class facilitiators: Lee Posey, Tom Roberts, and Hal Collums.

      Looking at C.S. Lewis, Heritage Hall, taught by the Rev. Dr. Ben McCoy, through April 13.  This class will examines the writings of C.S. Lewis; this Sunday focusing on his contribution to literature for children..

      Environmental Stewardship: Faith, Policy, and Action, Fellowship Hall, April 6, 13, 20, & 27

This Sunday: Faith and Environment: What’s the Connection? (April 6)
OPMH recently joined Greater Washington Interfaith Power and Light (GWIPL), a non-profit initiative that helps congregations, religious institutions and others in the Washington, DC area work for a more just, sustainable and healthier creation.  GWIPL Project Director Allison Fisher will explain how other faith communities are participating in this national movement and how GWIPL can be a resource to OPMH.  Also, Kent Myers, of the Environmental Stewardship Advocacy Group will discuss links between our environment and our faith, recounting the story of how a Reformed theologian was led to see a connection and developed a new aspect of his faith.  This will be followed by breakout discussions, allowing you to discuss your thoughts and questions in smaller groups.

Week 3 former Governor Mark Warner will lead a discussion of environmental stewardship on the national level.         Wednesday Night Bible Study: Judges and Ruth continues in Flounder 1B from 7:30-8:30 pm.

 

Opportunities to Give or Serve:

 

Church Work Day: Sat., April 12 from 8-12, hosted by the Facilities Ministry. Opportunities for gardening, yard work, painting, small repair projects and general cleaning will be available and all ages and skill levels. All are welcome. Contact Joe McCoy at 703.535.3575.

 

Mexico Mission Work Camp – Members and friends of OPMH will travel to Reynosa, Mexico from July 20-26 to build a home for a Mexican family in partnership with Faith Ministries. Registration and a 50% deposit must be received in the Church Office by April 30. West Virginia Work Camp – Closer to home, a group will travel to Pursglove, WV (just outside Morgantown) to help with light home repairs, June 22-27. Register now! Young Adult Retreat – Got Time? Join young adults from around the presbytery for a time of fellowship, relaxation, worship, and theological reflection at Meadowkirk Restreat Center in Middleburg (just an hour away), April 18-20. The cost is only $25 for the entire weekend (meals included) due to generous support from the Presbytery. The topic will focus on our stewardship of time. SPIRIT Group Outing to Fredericksburg on April 30: Plans are to allow a choice of visits to two different sites. One option is Belmont, the former residence of American figure painter Gari Melchers. The second option is the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. Lunch will follow at Brock’s Riverside Grill, overlooking the Rappahannock River in Old Town Fredericksburg.

 

Concert with a Cause: Sunday, April 27 at 3:00 pm – Children’s Chorus of Washington, Joan Gregoryk, Founder and Artistic Director. This professional children’s chorus has sung in such prestigious venues as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. They have performed great woks with many distinguished groups, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington Chorus, Choral Arts Society, Cathedral Choral Society, and Master Chorale. The benefit is the United Orphanage and Academy in Moi’s Bridge, Kenya.

 

Ongoing Events:

First Sundays with the Stephen Ministers: Stephen Ministers hosts an informal time of fellowship on the first Sunday of each month for those who are experiencing a difficult or challenging time and would welcome a willing listener. We meet in the Elliot House parlor following the 11:00 am service.
