Missions Addressing Poverty and Hunger PDF Print E-mail

ALIVE! is the primary OPMH mission related to poverty and hunger. Alexandrians Involved Ecumenically comprises 39 interdenominational congregations that act on the principle of Christian "love in action."

ALIVE! helps the city's needy, children, disabled, and others by providing emergency shelter, financial assistance, and food deliveries; distributing donated housewares and furniture; and operating an accredited early childhood education center. The Last Saturday Food Distribution program serves almost 500 families by distributing surplus and fresh foods. ALIVE! encourages member congregations to become better acquainted while reaching out through the larger community of faith to Alexandria neighbors in need.

The Meeting House provides direct financial support to the program and participates in several fundraisers and food-household collection drives.

The Meeting House supports the following additional missions related to poverty and hunger.

  • Bag Lunch Program provides free lunches for the needy five days a week at Meade Memorial Episcopal Church. It is a cooperative effort by eight Presbyterian and Episcopal churches. Seven additional churches do the same for an Arlandria component of the program, which serves meals at the Salvation Army.  This program was founded by the Meeting House in 1983. The Meeting House provides direct financial support to the program and volunteers who donate, pack, and serve lunches at Meade.
  • Meals on Wheels volunteers, in teams of two, deliver meals to nearly 100 elderly and/or shut in clients. The program is supervised by Senior Services of Alexandria.  Meeting House members deliver meals one day a month.
  • Christ House Dinners are prepared and served by Meeting House members every other month at this Alexandria homeless shelter, which is run by Catholic Charities.
  • Carpenter's Shelter Dinners are prepared and served periodically by Meeting House members. Carpenter's Shelter is the primary OPMH mission partner that addresses homelessness.
  • Christ House (DC) provides 24-hour medical care, case management, and other supportive services to the homeless. The first of its kind, the 32-bed facility remains the only such facility in the Washington area. It has served more than 4,800 homeless since its doors opened in 1985.  The Meeting House provides direct financial assistance and its members collect clothing and items for residents at Christmas.
