2016 Service Sunday

Service Sunday 2016

On Sunday June 5, Meeting House members and friends made a big difference for many of our local mission partners by taking part in annual Service Sunday.  Just over 110 adults and children helped out with nine different volunteer projects at the church and in our Alexandria neighborhoods.  In addition to doing good deeds, Service Sunday participants reported that fellowship and new member involvement abounded.

2016Service Sunday8Some of our annual projects included a Rebuilding Together Alexandria 4+ hour home makeover involving painting the downstairs of a townhouse, revamping the front lawn, and electrical wiring as well as fixing the back gate.  Painting of the Sunday school furniture in the OPMH education building also took place.  Thanks to good weather, a number of people were able to be outside sprucing up the grounds around Elliott House and the sanctuary.

2016Service Sunday6One crew of 20 worked outdoors at the Meeting House Cemetery pulling invasive ivy from gravestones and benches, while also cleaning signs and the Columbarium.  At Guest House in DelRay, a group of Youth and adults trimmed shrubs, weeded garden beds, and laid mulch.  The Flower Pot Project was a hit among participants of all ages, with the youngest at age 11 months.  The 50+ decorated and planted flower pots went primarily to Meals on Wheels recipients to wish them a happy Father’s Day.

2016Service Sunday5Finally, a group of about 10 people including wrote letters to elected officials in support of Bread for the World’s 2016 Offering of Letters Campaign supporting child nutrition programs.  The letters were lifted up for prayers and will be delivered to Capitol Hill.  Also a wonderful team made bag lunches for our work crews, and others delivered Meals on Wheels.

Thanks to everyone who participated this year by putting your faith to work in our community.  It took a village to pull this event off, and we are so grateful for all our volunteers.
